Founders Porter - Dark, Rich, and Sassy (not quite sexy)

Mark sent me a great haul this time out and I'm moving through them to get them all up. Mark knows porters are my favorite style. They have a soft spot in my heart. It was the first style that really expanded my beer taste thanks to those pioneers at Anchor Brewing.

The Founders porter is true to the style and an excellent representation. Thanks Buddy!

It pours dark brown/black not quite pitch black. It's lighter than an imperial stout or other motor oil type offering. it has a fine foamy head that gushes up to fill and stand proud above the rim of your glass. It settles down as you drink it to lace the edge. The nose has a coffee chocolaty smell with a hint of the alcohol.

The flavor has a wonderful balance of coffee, chocolate maltiness with a slight hop taste at the end to clean off the palette. It has a lighter mouthfeel than a stout but that's what a porter is supposed to have. It's a wonderfully drinkable beer with tons of great flavor and balance. The extra card up its sleeve is the hop bitter at the end. It steps up and puts a bow on it.

I would put this up against, Deschutes Black Butte, Anchor Porter, and any other porter any day. It is the special dark beer you can definitely session in a bar or hanging out watching the race. The 6.5% may catch you by surprise and you might get called a lightweight by your sub 5% drinking buddies.

Mark-o-Meter: 4.5/5 stars

Pros: an excellent very drinkable porter with tons of flavor and razor sharp balance

Cons: your buddies will call you lightweight when you fall over after your third beer

Verdict: A top tier beer that you can drink all afternoon.

Glad you liked it. Founders Porter has been one of my favorites for quite some time now. It's got a lot of flavor but none overwhelms the others and it drinks easily so that you can session it. And I have.
